The Design Process

The Design Process

I thought it might be interesting to show you the design process. This is a computer mock up of one of our regimental Maasai beaded belt samples which has been ordered. I ask for a tie, sock, anything really which is an accurate reflection of the colours and design needed.

Most regimental beaded belts, for example, are horizontal, as per tradition. Then I use the bead chart provided by the Nairobi bead suppliers and, with advice of a not-to-be-named colour expert(!), I come up with the design.

Then I use What’s App to contact Jo in Nairobi with this design attached.

It is then passed to Everlyn and her amazing band of Maasai mama beaders in the Ngong Hills or Amboseli in Kenya.

Maasai beading at its best and a wonderful combining of the traditions of 2 countries linked by a shared heritage and history.

Hakuna matata!
